How I Became a Youth Activist

I, Sulaiman Abubakar Umar, became a youth activist at an early age because I was passionate about making a difference in the world. I was always interested in championing positive change, fostering inclusive communities, and leaving a lasting legacy that uplifts and empowers those around me. I felt like I could use my voice to help others. I started by volunteering for community development work and local organizations that were working on issues I cared about, like youth inclusion, environmental protection, and humanitarian and animal rights. I also started writing about my experiences on social media, and I quickly realized that I had a platform to reach a wider audience.

As time went on, I became more involved in activism. I started organizing/attending awareness campaigns, sensitisation and outreach, and I spoke at events about the issues I was passionate about. I also started working with other young activists, and together we were able to make a real impact on our community.

One of the most memorable experiences I had as a youth activist was when I joined the #NotTooYoungToRun Campaign. This is an act of parliament which sought to reduce the age limit of running for elective offices in Nigeria. I worked with other young Nigerians and civil society groups to campaign and push for the bill, and we were able to get the attention of the media and the government. On 29th May 2018, the Nigerian President, Muhammadu Buhari, announced in his ‘democracy day’ national address that he planned to sign the bill into law. President Muhammadu Buhari subsequently signed the bill of Not Too Young To Run into law On 31st May 2018, and I was proud to have been a part of that victory.

Being a youth activist has been an incredibly rewarding experience. I’ve been able to make a difference in the world – and I’ve met some amazing people along the way. I believe that everyone has the power to make a difference in the world. If you are passionate about an issue, I encourage you to get involved and speak out. You can make a real impact.

Together, we can create a better future for all.

With love,

Sulaiman A.U II.
